about

Late in November 2023 I was approached and asked if I’d be interested in preparing some music for a reading of two spooky Christmas stories. The remit asked for some spooky music. I set to and prepared 26 minutes of music with spooky bits, quiet bits and more romantic bits. Pixabay.com had a very suitable free seven minute sample (‘haunted-house-ambience’), which gave me lots of spooky sounds to work with. I added my own musical ideas and worked them together.

After submitting to the show’s producer I eagerly awaited a reaction. The music was accepted and we met to discuss a few changes and additions. The original 26 minute piece turned into The Haunting of Three Spirits Suite. That was then chopped into three separate extended, individual mixes to be played as people walked in, during the interval and as they left at the end.

The opening piece served as a spooky overture. Second came a quiet piece to sit in the back ground while teas and coffees were consumed. This second piece was somewhat inspired by Brian Eno’s ‘Music for Airports’ and consists of a fairly monotonous loop repeated four times for the duration of the interval. Finally came the more romantic piece to close the evening as the audience left.

All four pieces are now here for your listening pleasure, the original ‘writer’s mix’ and the three ‘on the night mixes’.
